NJAJCS was founded in 1970 to “serve as a forum for the discussion of programs of Jewish communal service on a professional level, and of the application of general professional techniques to service in Jewish communities.” In 1984, the organization established an annual award “to recognize an outstanding member who has demonstrated through his or her career in Jewish communal service, a consistent history of professional and personal commitment to the field and the quality of Jewish life.” The first recipient was the late Saul Schwarz, a founder of NJAJCS and the award continues in his name.

In order to be selected for this award, the nominee must significantly advance the status of Jewish communal workers, Jewish communal service and the NJAJCS. In addition to other requirements, he or she would have served as a role model, teacher, and mentor for less experienced Jewish communal workers, and demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and professional skills.

“The Saul Schwarz Distinguished Service Award is an honor accorded annually to a distinguished professional who has devoted his career to Jewish life in our state,” said Arthur Sandman, Associate Executive Vice President, Program Services, United Jewish Communities of MetroWest NJ, in Whippany, NJ. “We were very proud to give it to Chuck Berkowitz this year in light of the vision he has given to the care of seniors in our community and the professional example he has set for people in our field.”

All of us connected with the Jewish Home Family add our accolades for this great honor, and are proud that Chuck has spent 40 years of his distinguished career with the Jewish Home. Mazel Tov Chuck!
