The Jewish Home at Rockleigh, Russ Berrie Home for Jewish Living, is one of the top nursing homes in the State of New Jersey, as cited by U.S. News “America’s Best Nursing Homes’ Honor Roll” in its February 2010 online issue. In addition, JHR is the only kosher facility in Bergen County named to the list.

The overall rating of five stars, which JHR received, is determined by Nursing Home Compare, a program run by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It is the highest rating a nursing home can receive from CMS, which analyzes information on all facilities enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid. This “five star rating was created to help consumers, their families and caregivers compare nursing homes and identify areas about which to ask questions,” notes medicare.gov.

The magazine’s list is “culled from more than 15,500 nursing homes nationwide” and 359 licensed nursing homes in New Jersey, according to U.S. News.

While “relatively few Americans see the inside of a nursing home… on any given day, 1.5 million people are living in the nation’s 16,000-plus nursing homes, and in a typical year more than 3.2 million Americans will spend at least some time in one,” the magazine said.

Chuck Berkowitz, President & CEO of the Jewish Home Family, said that the Jewish Home at Rockleigh and the Jewish Home Assisted Living tries to make sure that every resident who enters our doors receives superior care. “Our 98 percentage of occupancy is a recognition of the care given at the Jewish Home.”
