Living the Dream

Charlene Vannucci, Director of Therapeutic Recreation/Volunteer Coordinator

The residents of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh achieved their goal and realized their dream when they received their new recreation bus on Thursday, April 1, 2010. The bus was delivered to the Jewish Home to the joy of the many residents, staff, volunteers and family members who had been so instrumental in the fundraising efforts over the past two years. This bus was specially designed to anticipate the ever-changing needs of the residents. Special features include a power lift and fold-up seats to accommodate wheelchairs when needed as well as space for four lockdowns so that residents can remain comfortably seated in their wheelchairs without transferring. All in all, the bus has the capacity to accommodate 14 passengers.

The Dedication Ceremony took place immediately following the arrival and all those who took part in the fundraising were acknowledged. A special thank you was extended to the members of the resident bus committee: Sharon Masarsky, Renee Kleinberg and Lee Kaufmann who participated in and helped plan all the fundraisers. Mimi Kassel also received a special thank you for her generous donation which provided the balance of the funds needed to purchase the bus as well as the first year’s operating expenses.

On behalf of the residents, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated in the fundraising efforts. Every donation made, craft item sold, raffle purchased and basket auctioned brought us that much closer to living our dream.
