Poetry Reading at the JHAL

Iris Rosendahl, Public Relations Coordinator

Claire Schneider, a resident at the Jewish Home Assisted Living in River Vale, celebrated her 93rd birthday on June 1st by reading poems from her two self-published poetry collections, “A Slice of Life: Reflection” and “Inspirations Unlimited.” Her daughter, Terry Bovin, joined the celebration. Claire’s books of poetry were published by Greenwood House, and her poems generally emphasize the positive aspects of life, as Claire herself likes to do.

Born in Russia, she left with her parents when she was three. She arrived in the U.S. at the age of six, moving to Brooklyn. A graduate of Brooklyn College, she is fluent in several languages, including French, Spanish, Italian and English. Claire was a substitute teacher at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn for 52 years. When she retired, the high school presented her with the Finest Substitute of the Decades Award.

In addition to her writing, Claire has also designed many one-of-a-kind pieces of handmade jewelry using semi-precious stones, crystal and cloisonné beads. Some of these original pieces have been donated to charitable organizations to be auctioned or used as door prizes.

Mrs. Schneider moved to JHAL in January 2009 from Florida so she could be closer to her two daughters, Terry Bovin and Anne Wolfson, and the rest of her family. Her generally enthusiastic attitude includes life at JHAL. She’s involved in nearly every activity offered at the facility on a daily basis, and often says how much she enjoys her participation in this busy schedule.

Claire is very proud of her family and often mentions the accomplishments of her daughters, grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Claire, Happy Birthday and thank you for being an inspiration to us all!
