A Tribute to Outstanding Nursing Care

Iris Rosendahl, Public Relations Coordinator

Maurice Levy, a resident of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh in 2006, felt comfortable and very well cared for. “He loved the Home,” said his son Alan. “The nurses were incredible during my father’s illness,” he explained. In addition to skillful treatment, they were “warm and kind”. As a result, the Levy family wanted to do something to specifically acknowledge the nursing care Maurice received before he passed away.

After considering various possibilities, the Levy Family decided to establish an endowment for nursing education. This would be a way to single out the nursing staff for their good work year after year.

The family established the Maurice Levy Memorial Nursing Education Program in Maurice’s honor. The first annual lecture was held on Wednesday, January 16th. Over 50 nursing professionals from long-term care facilities all over the county attended. They were treated to a lovely dinner and three lectures that focused on the “Legal Aspects of Nursing.” The speakers included Leo-Felix M. Jurado, Ph.D.-c, RN, CAN, APN, C, professor and assistant chairperson, department of nursing, County College of Morris, Randolph, N.J.; Mary Strobel, LPN GC, director of medical records and employee health; and Maryann Adams, OTR/L, director of rehabilitation, both on staff at the Jewish Home.

Maurice’s son Alan, an accountant and entrepreneur in the telecommunications field since 1993, heads up two telephone companies. He said his father helped spark the idea for his newest project, BlogTalkRadio, a free service for users to listen to or host talk shows on their own. Levy maintained a blog for his ill father so family and friends could remain updated on his health, and later as a memorial for his life. Today it’s an interactive social radio network.

Maurice Levy is survived by his wife Herma; his son Alan and daughter-in-law Jane, and grandchildren Neil, Rachel, and Hanna; and his daughter Beth and husband Joe. The nursing staff and everyone at the Jewish Home are grateful to the Levy family for their insight and generosity.
