South Korean Delegation Visits JHR

Melanie S. Cohen, CFRE, Vice President of Development & Public Relations

A delegation of five members of the South Korean Provence of Gyeongsangbuk-do, led by Vice Governor, Young Il Kim, visited the Jewish Home at Rockleigh late in March. The Vice Governor, a dentist by profession, is responsible for political affairs in his Province, including the delivery of healthcare services. He noted that 14% of South Korea’s population is over the age of 65, and that this percentage has been rising on an annual basis. Thus, they were particularly interested in learning more about the delivery of healthcare to seniors.

Executive Vice President, Chuck Berkowitz met with the delegation, answered a variety of questions and led the tour of the facility. Some of the topics and insights explained were the uniqueness that the Home’s rooms were all private enabling unrestricted visiting hours, the rehabilitation facilities, the on-site Medical Suites, admissions requirements, daily cost and government sponsored Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. There was considerable interest in the Adult Day Health Care program and the ability it gives seniors to be able to remain as long as possible as members of the community in their own homes.

Chuck and Mr. Kim discussed leaving the lines of communication open for possible future visits from South Korean healthcare staffers.

Most of the delegation was not fluent in English, and Nam Lee, a member of the Jewish Home’s Nursing Administrative Staff, acted as the interpreter. A surprise to all and a complete coincidence — when introduced to each other — Nam Lee and the Vice Governor realized they hailed from the same home town in South Korea. Small world!
